Starch Hydration


Established in 1919, Tongaat Hulett Starch manufactures at five world-class milling facilities located in the Western Cape, and they also have a dedicated Sorbitol facility in Chloorkop. They manufacture thousands of products, in many different industries such as food, beverage, pharmaceutical, textile, paper converting, paper making, adhesives and spray drying.

Tongaat are at the forefront of their industry and continue this by investing in new technologies and processes, which brought them to DC Norris and our Jet Cook Steam Infusion,

This week at our test facility at Cape Town Peninsula University, we ran several trials using our Steam Infusion System to demonstrate both our low temperature activation of starches, and our ability to control the shear added during the process. This in turn controls the hydration of the starch and can be adjusted for different starches and solid levels.

Technical Service Manager Nkuli Khanyeza said, “I cannot believe the speed and repeatability of the starch hydration using the Steam Infusion System”.

Samples were taken away by THS for micro photography, and further trials will be planned in the near future.
